Flower Notes: 10-30cm tall; leaves obscure-lanceolate, greatest width above centre, without spots; stem hollow; inflorescence squat, lower bracts towering above their flowers, purple-red or yellow, 3 tepals bent together, the 2 lateral outer ones protruding upwards, lip 8-12 mm long, rounded, indistinctly in three parts or only toothed, spurs horizontal or ascending. Meadows, bushy slopes; intermittently dry, acid soils. 800-2100m, flowering time 5-6. Rather rare. Smells of elderflower (Sambucus nigra) hence the name. In some countries it is referred to as "Adam and Eve" referring to the two colours, yellow and red.
