Family: Willowherb - Onagraceae (Oenotheraceae)
Genus: Epilobium
Species: fleischeri
Date Taken: 19/07/2005
Altitude: 2260m
Area: Valais
Walking Notes: Zermatt, Zmutt, Kalbermatten, Schönbiel Hut; descent to Kalbermatten and Zmutt; from Zmutt via Panoramaweg
Location: By the boiler-plate slab on the path from the bottom of the waterfall at the Dixence works
Flower Notes: 10-30cm tall; creeping; leaves alternate, narrowly lanceolate, 1-4cm long, at most 3mm wide, smooth-edged; flowers red, 1.5-2.5cm across, terminal, in short, upright raceme. Alluvial areas, talus, stony, base-rich soils. 1000-2400m, flowering time 7-8. Not common. It immediately reminds you of Rosebay Willowherb but unlike that tall and ubiquitous weed, is very short, often growing procumbently on stony ground next to a river with flowers disproportionately large for such a small alpine.
